MGH Revere Food Pantry: Healthy Families Clinic and Teaching Kitchen Program

In 2023, Massachusetts General Hospital’s Revere HealthCare Center opened a teaching kitchen and launched a lifestyle medicine program that showcases the power of a "Food Is Medicine" approach to sustainably and meaningfully improve community health.

The Lifestyle Empowerment Approach for Diabetes Remission (LEADR) Program

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) is developing a curriculum for physicians to run intensive, therapeutic lifestyle interventions for patients with type 2 diabetes. The curriculum will guide health professionals working in medically underserved communities and will introduce a program structure that can be reimbursed through medical billing by leveraging shared medical appointments.

Convening: Teaching Kitchens as catalysts of enhanced healthcare delivery

The Teaching Kitchen Collaborative brought 30 thought leaders together to identify opportunities for food is medicine-related interventions and develop strategies whereby food is medicine, lifestyle medicine, and teaching kitchen initiatives can be optimally positioned for maximal impact. The US House of Representatives, the CDC Foundation, and the Obama Foundation were represented at the convening.

Community Engaged Lifestyle Medicine (CELM)

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) expanded the use of CELM to improve healthy lifestyles in vulnerable communities. This project fostered innovation for whole health and shared learnings for broader implementation, specifically around real food for better health, teen suicide, and the Diabetes Undone curriculum.
